(Prunus persica var. nucipersica)
The Nectarine Tree, Prunus persica var. nucipersica is a variety of the Peach tree species, and is well known for it's fruit the "Nectarine". This tree and it's fruit are of the same species as the Peach tree, even though they are known as commercially different fruits. Nectarines are characterized by the absence of fruit-skin trichomes, producing no fuzz on the fruit skin, where as true peach fruits present the characteristic fuzz on the skin.
Genetic studies suggest that Nectarine trees produce the smooth fruit due to a recessive allele, whereas Peach trees produce the fuzzy skin fruit due to a dominant allele.
