Index of Scientific, Latin or Botanical Names of Trees

Trees are organized by genus, then species, subspecies, and variety. This allows searches for the genus name of a tree (example Abies - Fir) and for species search within the genus (example Abies alba - Silver fir). Subspecies can be identified by the "ssp." located after the species name. Example;
Pinus nigra - Austrian pine - (a species of Pine)
Pinus nigra ssp. Laricio - Corsican pine - (a subspecies of Austrian pine)

Varieties of tree species can be found the same way, identified by the "var." after the species name. Example:
Castanea pumila - Chinkapin - (a species of Chestnut)
Castanea pumila var. ozarkensis - Ozark chinkapin - (a variety of Chinkapin).

As you can see, Latin botanical tree names are organized scientifically, the first part of its name is always the genus the tree belongs to and then the species name is second. If there are subspecies or varieties, that name will be last.
